Taylor Hanson On Being Your Own Music Brand, Claiming That Identity

The 1997 teen idol explains how at their "Mmmbop" hit's height, the band was already 24/7 on the web with their fans.

Songwriter/producer Taylor Hanson, sat with Texas Chapter at the 2014 GRAMMY Block Party in Austin and spoke about claiming your own artistic identity. In 1997 the second Hanson album Middle Of Nowhere contained the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit "Mmmbop" which was nominated for Record Of The Year and Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal, while Taylor with his Tulsa, Oklahoma brothers Isaac and Zac were nominated as a band for Best New Artist, at the 40th GRAMMY Awards. Taylor related how by that time, the band's website was the center of their entire fan base. "We were able to galvanize that connection," Taylor said. He believes artists need to respect the identity they project to their fans in the 24/7 culture. "Like it or not, you're going to have to claim this is your brand, who you are, how people perceive you, your song, your show," said Taylor. He said today's rounded artist should "think about themselves as a full circle, somebody that's connecting with their fans, somebody that's writing songs, somebody who is a performer."
