Ingrid Michaelson Chases A New Approach

Before an intimate audience at the Museum's Clive Davis Theater, Michaelson discussed how she stepped out of her comfort zone and took a new collaborative approach for the making of her new album, Lights Out. She also performed a brief set, including her hit single "Girls Chase Boys.""On all my other records it was me writing all the music in one room with a producer," said Michaelson. "I wanted [Lights Out] to feel collaborative, like a big family getting together and creating this thing together and I think that's what I got."Born and raised in Staten Island, N.Y., Michaelson's second studio album, 2007's Girls And Boys, peaked at No. 6 on Billboard's Top Independent Albums chart and featured the Top 40 hit "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJOzdLwvTHA&amp;feature=kp" target="_blank">The Way I Am</a>," which subsequently appeared in an Old Navy commercial and on the popular television show "Grey's Anatomy." The exposure led to additional songs written by Michaelson to appear on TV shows such as "One Tree Hill" and "Army Wives," among others. Following the release of 2008's Be OK, Michaelson released 2009's Everybody and 2012's Human Again, the latter of which topped the Independent Albums chart and peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard 200.Released on April 15, Lights Out landed at No. 1 on the Independent Albums chart and No. 5 on the Billboard 200 on the strength of the Billboard Hot 100 hit "<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5GBT37_yyzY&amp;feature=kp" target="_blank">Girls Chase Boys</a>." The album features 14 tracks and includes collaborations with GRAMMY-winning producer Jacquire King (Buddy Guy, Kings Of Leon), Michaelson's bassist Chris Kuffner and singer/songwriter Katie Herzig, among others. Michaelson is currently in the midst of an international tour, with dates scheduled through September.Upcoming GRAMMY Museum events include The Drop: John Fullbright (June 30), The Drop: Dirty Heads (July 7), Great Guitars: Stanley Jordan (July 9), and Great Guitars: Laurence Juber (July 14).
